Anne McCaffrey is best known for the Dragonriders of Pern series. Her writing spans Science Fiction and Fantasy. She is one of the best writers in the genre.

The Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy
This trilogy chronicles the renaissance of Pern from the perspective of the dragonriders. It takes place at the same time as The Harper Hall of Pern Trilogy. This trilogy was started early in McCaffrey's career, and the first two are a bit dryer than her later work. But even this early in her career she shows a remarkable ability to draw you into her world. By the time she wrote The White Dragon McCaffrey had come into her own with the award winning style we have come to expect.

Young Jaxom, Lord Holder of Ruatha, while attending a hatching accidentally impressed a dragon. Dragonriders live in Weyrs, but Jaxom had to hold Ruatha or there would be bloodshed among those vying for the position. So Ruth, the only white dragon, came to stay at Ruatha Hold. Together Jaxon and Ruth would change the course of history. This is probably the best loved McCaffrey story of all time.

This trilogy chronicles the renaissance of Pern from the perspective of the Harpers of Pern. It takes place at the same time as The Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy. I have probably re-read this trilogy more than anything else McCaffrey has written, and I still enjoy it as much as the first time.
